The new chancellor of the American University of Sharjah (AUS Sharjah) from 01 August 2008 will be Dr Peter Heath, taking over from Dr Winfred L Thompson. Dr Heath will be the third chancellor of AUS. The appointment was announced by a press release from AUS 20 February 2008. Dr Heath’s previous postions and qualifications include:
- BA Magna Cum Laude - Princeton University
- PhD in Near Eastern Language and Civilisation - Harvard University
- First appointment to faculty of Birzeit University on the West Bank in Palestine.
- From 1988 at Washington University in St. Louis with the following positions:
- Professor of Arabic Language and Literature
- Director of the Centre for the Study of Islamic Societies and Civilisations
- Chair of the Department of Asian and Near Eastern Languages
- From 1998 he was Provost at the American University of Beirut
